Whether you live with your significant other, family, roommates, or friends you probably find yourself needing some alone time every now and then. I think it’s important to have a little nook in your house/apartment that is designated as your personal dwelling space. For me this space is my desk area. I first bought a desk in college to serve as a quiet spot to focus on my studies. Since then, my desk has turned into much more; it’s where I go to be productive, creative, and even to relax. I love having a space to make my own, and decided to share some tips on how to curate your own creative workspace!
LIGHTING: For me this is a key component of finding the perfect space. Choosing a spot with abundant natural light is preferable, but this isn’t always possible especially if you live in an apartment. Even then, there are ways to enhance the natural light you do have. I look to Scandinavian design for inspiration here. Even though they have long, dark winters they take advantage of light woods and white paint to make everything appear as bright as possible. I’ve found that by incorporating white into my desk, walls, and decor my space is so much brighter year-round. This is great during the winter when you are cooped up inside all day.
THEME: It’s not important to find a theme, but of course there are no rules here so if you would rather have one go for it! Because my workspace is mostly white, I didn’t even find it necessary to choose a color scheme. I love the little pops of color throughout and my mostly gold accessories. I am someone who is extremely distracted by any sort of visual clutter so I knew I wanted to keep the space looking as clean as possible. I have heard that a messy workspace can actually be beneficial to creativity… just not the case for me.
DECOR: My best advice here is to let the pieces come to you. What I mean is that, rather than running to the store and hoping to find all of the perfect accessories in one outing, you should collect pieces over a longer period of time. This way, you will choose decor that reflects your personality. The only things I bought right away were the stapler, tape dispenser, mug, and gold scissors…great examples that practical items can still make for pretty decor. Everything hanging on the wall was gifted to me by different people. I absolutely love how the pieces all seemed to come together in the end.
PERSONAL TOUCHES: This is what will really make the space feel like YOUR space. Fresh floral arrangements or potted plants can be a great way to achieve a cozy feel. These flowers were a Valentine’s Day gift from my wonderful husband, and inspired me to finally shoot my desk! The aloe plant is a permanent fixture on my shelf. After years of having them die on me, I finally realized it was because they hated the pretty glazed pots I was keeping them in. Once I bought a plain old clay pot, the aloe started thriving (clay absorbs excess water and keeps succulents from developing root rot). In an effort to make it more aesthetically pleasing I added a bit of white paint and voila. The monogrammed mug used as a pencil holder is another thing that makes my space feel more personalized along with the “I heart Slovenia” pen we picked up during our wedding trip. You really can’t go wrong, so have fun with the process! 🙂

i loved this post and couldn’t agree more with having a space with a ton of light! I started decorating my workspace and then got distrated hahah but hopefully can get around to doing it again, I also find that collecting pieces over a period of time is much better and allows you to find more unique pieces over-time!
